Acne is a common enough problem that continues to worry teenagers and the old alike. Overstimulation of the sebaceous glands attached to the hair follicles by androgens/ estrogens are the most common cause of scalp acne. It is seen in both men and women. The scalp acne forms much in the same way as acne in any other part of the body. Scalp pimples are just as painful and itchy as a pimple on your face, but more difficult to treat because it is covered by the hair. Dealing with scalp acne and taking preventative measures can ensure the scalp acne is not a reoccurring problem. These are some of substances suggested for treating pimples on the scalp:
Benzoyl Peroxide – It is a common ingredient in acne washes and lotions. It kills the bacteria which otherwise clogs the pores to form new pimples. It also helps clear away excess oil and dead cells from the affected area. It is a common product in the ‘over-the counter’ products. It comes in varying strengths ranging from 2.5 to 10 percent.
Salicylic Acid – It is one of the most used ingredients in facial washes and medicated wipes. It works by preventing pores from clogging and can even unclog pores that have already got plugged, shrinking the existing pimples on the scalp. It is found in strengths ranging from 0.5 to 5 percent in most ‘over the counter’ products.
Alpha Hydroxy Acid –It is present in most of the ‘over the counter’ acne treatments for the scalp as they help clear away dead skin cells and reduce inflammation. Some studies also suggest alpha-hydroxy acids help in the growth of smooth skin.
Sulfur – It can help clear away dead skin cells and excess oil from the scalp and is usually combined with topical ‘over the counter’ products such as skin wash or medicated topical ointments.
These are some of the pimple remedies that will help treat pimples, but for cases where a pimple breakout has occurred, it is advisable to visit a dermatologist and take the medicines prescribed.
